Several decades ago, I dreamed of an exercise technique that would give students beautiful, lean, toned and healthy bodies for life and would help empower them to realize their own dreams. I started with an exercise technique I loved, The Lotte Berk Method, and fine-tuned its exercises by drawing on the knowledge of physical therapists.
I added wisdom from my father George Leonard’s book, “Mastery,” to create a teaching system that would empower students to make lasting changes to both their bodies and lives. The product of my work is The Bar Method.

1. The Bar Method quickly re-shapes students’ muscles.

The Bar Method exercise targets the muscles that play the greatest role in body change, then keeps these muscles working intensely and safely long enough for them to change. It then intensely stretches each muscle worked to make it look & feel longer & more graceful.

2. The Bar Method slims down students’ bodies.

The Bar Method workout is fast-paced form of interval training that maximizes caloric burn during & after every class. This format gives students slimmer, leaner bodies after a few months of regular attendance.

3. The Bar Method maximizes results with its strategic class design.

The Bar Method boosts results by placing its exercises in a specific order. First, it organizes the sections of the class so that they alternate between the front and the back sides of the body, enabling students to tone one side of their body while they elongate the side they just worked. Then it slims down students’ bodies by placing the most aerobic exercises in the second half of class when students are very warmed up and are burning away body fat. These design elements give exceptional results by multiplying the benefits students’ get from each exercise.

The Bar Method keeps students' joints safe by following the recommendations of physical therapists and our medical consultants.

Bar Method teachers learn and are tested on anatomy and physiology, which enables them to give their students individualized hands-on adjustment throughout class. Students gain knowledge of body-alignment & improve their ability to safely target difficult-to-reach muscles safely.

The Bar Method is dedicated to making the benefits of its workout accessible to students of varying body types, ages and fitness levels. For example, students with sensitive shoulders get options from their teachers that allow them to keep their arms below shoulder height. Students with tight hamstrings have access to lower bars and straps to help them stretch, and students with sensitive backs get special cushions for added support.

Aspiring Bar Method teachers audition to be accepted into the Bar Method’s training program. Trainees study for up-to-six months and must pass a series of exams before being qualified to teach. As teachers, they undergo an evaluation every year in order to remain certified. This system ensures that Bar Method students always get a well-taught, body-changing workout in every Bar Method studio they attend.
